Don’t let employment legislation keep you awake at night

Facing your fearsSage People Advice

For some business owners, employment legislation can be a nightmare. What with laws changing all the time and the threat of massive fines if you get them wrong, it’s enough to bring you out in a cold sweat. Sage People Advice offers employment law, HR and Health & Safety Advice for businesses of all sizes, keeping customers up to date and helping make sense of legislation.

Knowledge is power

Employment law only has to be a nightmare if you let it. Really, it’s only a fear of the unknown. It’s easy enough to conquer that dread by finding out about any upcoming regulations and reading them through.

Staying informed about how you should run your business to stay compliant needn’t be hard. In reality, only a few changes take place each year, usually in April and October, although more have been pushed through in the second half of 2012.

For instance, the next round of changes looks like this:

  • September: Some of the changes to the Vetting and Barring Scheme, which were included in the Protection of Freedoms Act 2012, will come into effect.
  • October: The national minimum wage rates for adult workers and apprentices will be increased.
  • October: The Pensions Act 2008 comes into effect.
  • December: The Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) and the Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA) will be merged into a single body, which will provide a barring and criminal records service.

Empower yourself and your people

Getting on top of employment law, by using a service like our Sage People Advice, can be a huge weight off your mind and bring new confidence to the way you interact with your people. Once your team are assured that you have all their needs and concerns under control, they can focus more on helping to grow your business.

Like most aspects of running a business, dealing with employment law is a continual process. You need to be aware of what regulations are on the horizon and if there are any changes you need to make to the way your business runs.

We explain changes in plain English, focusing on what the laws are and what you need to do to stay compliant, as well as providing any supporting documents you may need to implement changes.

If you’re a Sage People Advice or SageCover customer, keep an eye out for the Sage Business Advice newsletter in your inbox, which will give you a heads up about any forthcoming employment law changes that you should know about. The newsletter will also give you practical advice about how to prepare for any changes that you should put into place.
