What does the end of Windows XP mean for your Sage software?

You may have noticed Windows XP making an appearance in blogs and news articles recently. The reason being that Microsoft Extended Support for Windows XP has now ended. What does this mean? Well, Microsoft will no longer be offering any technical support or security updates for Windows XP beyond this date.

Many businesses still use Windows XP so Microsoft have recently promised to update their anti-malware for Windows XP until July 2015. It’s good news for Windows XP users as it means their security software will continue to detect and fix new malware and virus threats targeting Windows XP until July 2015. This gives businesses more time to prepare.

Despite this news, if your business is still running Windows XP it’s worth thinking about a move to Windows 7 or Windows 8 sooner rather than later, and there are benefits for doing so:

  • Better protection against security threats to your computers and business software
  • New software and applications you might use in the future are unlikely to be compatible with Windows XP
  • Modern software and hardware means you’re not tied to doing business in the office or from a desktop computer

Will you still support my software if I use Windows XP?

Yes. If you’re already running Sage 50 Accounts, Sage 50 Payroll, Sage Instant Accounts or Sage 50 Payroll on Windows XP you’ll be pleased to hear we’ll still support your software after this date. But, if you contact us with issues related to Windows XP we won’t be able to refer you to Microsoft for technical assistance.

However, we won’t be able to support you on new versions of our software bought after April 2014. We’re going to be updating our system requirements in April and they will no longer include Windows XP, so you’ll need a new Windows Operating System.
