Innovating for our customers with Google Apps APIs

For us, delivering for our Small & Medium Business customers requires us to do two things. Work with other leading tech companies to find the best solutions for our customers, and leapfrog ahead in terms of the speed we develop our products.

We know how hard these heroes of the economy work –and how many hours they put in a week to provide growth and prosperity for us all, and the last thing they want to do is struggle with cumbersome technology and multiple data sources, just to keep an eye on their business finances. People are used to running their personal lives from their phones, live and in real time, with all the information at their fingertips. If we’re serious about our customers, we need to empower them to do the same with their businesses. Integrated systems that are simple to use and available anytime, anywhere.

This week our product team is in California at Google I/O, an event for creative coders who are building the ‘what’s next’ for tech everywhere. Here, Google launched their new Google Sheets API, where we were proud to be a technology partner, working behind the scenes on a pre-release version. Sage’s innovation exports data from Sage Intelligence to create a dynamically updated spreadsheet packed with charts and analysis – all in one click!

We’ve been a Premier Partner for Google Apps for two years now, and this latest project builds on our strategic collaboration. For me, it’s a great example of a customer-focused project, executed at speed.

What excites me the most is that we are trailblazing the Google Sheets API opportunity for financial software users, with the vision of bringing the ability to export data straight into Google Sheets from Sage products. Our customers, the Small & Medium Business owners powering economies the world over, will have the freedom to mine and analyse business critical information wherever they have access to a web browser or a smart phone, enabling them to make faster and better business decisions.

You will have also heard me talk recently about talent at Sage. Programs like this for me are the fruition of our people agenda – our product management team had the vision to link our products with Google Sheets for the benefit of our customers, and they took it from idea to proof of concept in less than two months, with an eye to releasing to our customers as a rich integration with Sheets in the near future. That’s the speed of Sage.

To compete in today’s market conditions, businesses need to have the ability to access critical information in seconds rather than the hours or even days that this used to take – this proof of concept delivers on this. I can’t wait to make it a reality for our customers and to hear their feedback so we can start working on making it even better.
